URI Center and The Peace Flag Project Collaborates on Day of Peace Programs.

September 21st is the UN designated International Day of Peace, and the URI Center will once again be planning a celebration on the URI Quad, including the making of Peace Flags by students and campus community members. Ginny Fox, Director of the Peace Flag Project is heading up a full month of programs and activities including Peace Flag Workshops, Peace Art Exhibits, 9/11 Remembrance WaterFire, Community Service, Conversation and Dialogue Session, Heritage Day Festival, and WaterFire with a Silent Walking Meditation, Peace through Laughter & Silence, and various Spoken Word, Poetry, and Music for Peace artists. New Academic Year Begins

The Center is busy welcoming back students, faculty, and staff to URI as the new academic year begins. We are especially eager to welcome those students who completed their certification as Kingian Level I and Level II trainers during last spring semester and this summer during the International Nonviolence Summer Institute. The numbers of URI students who are becoming involved with nonviolence through the interdisciplinary minor and/or the certification training courses is growing. We are excited about doubling our nonviolence and peacce programs efforts on campus this year with these outstanding trainers working with the Center. Fasten your seat belts, nonviolence and peace studies is taking off this fall at URI!

Dr. King Accepts Nobel Peace Prize 45 Years Ago

As President Barak Obama accepts the Nobel Peace Prize today, we remember the acceptance of the same award by another African American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this same day 45 years ago. Dr. King went on to defy the US military and speak out against the policies of the government establishment when he later took one of the first public positions opposing the war in Vietnam. Yes, times were different then, but war and the violence of war remains the same, whether in Vietnam or in Afghanistan. We recognize President Obama for the honor of this great award and hope that he will soon stand with Dr, King and other Peace Prize recipients in taking the courageous stand against a war that he ironically finds himself contributing to as commander in chief.

Veteran Tom Mahaney Ends 29 Day Hunger Strike in DC

Congressman and Staff,
Yesterday at 3:00 PM, in the offices of the Senate Armed Services Committee I was granted the opportunity to present my views on the issue of the “Stop-Loss” and it’s affect on the rise in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder now plaguing the combat troops caused to endure multiple deployments due to abusive implementation of US Code Subsection 12305, Title 10 during the past eight years. The meeting was presided over by Jonathan Clark of the SAFC and also attended by Jeremy Steslicki of Chairman Levin’s office.
This Presidential Authority was executed by George W. Bush on September 14, 2001 in response to and for the purpose of pursing the terrorists behind the horrific events of three days prior. However, this authority, once in place, was promptly used wrongfully by the then Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, upon the active Ready Reserves involved; to support a Military Action in Iraq.
As a direct result of this impropriety, countless American families and communities have been caused unnecessarily to suffer the heartrending effects of PTSD. It has been and remains my objective to strengthen the Code pertaining to this provision to see that this can never happen again.
At the conclusion of our meeting I was given the assurance that the SASC will actively pursue some resolution to this issue as well as allow me to participate and contribute, on a minor level, to its development. At that point I felt strongly enough about reaching my goal of attaining concrete positive action to end my Fast. At 5:15 PM I had cup of soup and a glass of wine, taking my first sustenance other than water in 29 days.
Tough the Fast is over, the work is not. I am asking all who read this to join in contributing to and supporting the effort to strengthen and tighten the entire Subsection of Title 10 as it relates to the Mobilization Powers granted the President and Congress. We need a guarantee that these powers cannot, in the future, be so easily used in a manner that goes so against the spirit in which they were conceived; that of temporarily providing for our security while we build our Regular Army to a strength sufficient to ensure our defense.
As a result, both our future security and health will be better protected. If you possess or receive any supporting documentation or considerations, I urge you to forward it to the offices of the House and Senate Armed Forces Committees.
In conclusion, I would like to thank everyone here for the many kindnesses I have been afforded by you in the last month. And please feel free to contact me at any time.

A Newfound Community at URI

It's impossible to accurately describe the energy put fourth by the University yesterday when over 1,000 individuals congregated on the quad to participate in Christina Knoll's silent protest against hate crimes on campus. The attendance of individuals varied as greatly as the student body, with varsity athletic teams, Hillel, the GBLT center, students, faculty, staff, provosts and even Rhody the Ram in attendance. And while everyone held their silence in protest for 15 minutes, the feeling from the quad can be described as the loudest silence to have ever fallen over campus. The silence that was created yesterday brought fourth a sense of community for the University. Here were 1,000 individuals who would not tolerate hate crimes on campus, and here were 1,000 individuals who would stand up to a campus injustice. The protest yesterday was a small step in the right direction, but it brought together more individuals than any campus outreach ever has. Yesterday's protest showed URI that the student body truly believes in the importance of diversity and tolerance. And when the 15 minutes of protest were up, I don't think I have ever heard the Rhody Ram chant ever yelled so proudly.

Collaborative Planning with The Gathering for Justice

Veteran's Day reminds us that violence begets more violence and that war rarely if ever has led to lasting peace. The aftermath in terms of lives lost (military and innocent civilians), the casualty survivors who suffer with lifelong disabilities, plus the emotional trauma and inner violence experienced by family members is a tragic loss and a high price to pay for a temporary negative peace. Let today serve as a reminder for us to renew our pledge to continue our efforts to use nonviolence education and peace studies to build a global beloved community. On a more positive note, I enjoyed some collaborative planning time on SKYPE with Malia Lazu, Director of the Gathering for Justice organization today. We are engaged in exploring the possibilities for the Gathering to become an organizational partner with the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies. The Gathering has been doing some amazing work nationally in a dozen metropolitan communities. Their work includes a strong foundation built on commitment to nonviolence principles and nonviolence training and education strategies. Jonathan Lewis and Justin Richards trainers who began their journey into nonviolence at the URI Center are lead trainers at the national level for the Gathering. Nonviolence Training at Valparaiso Peace & Justice Symposium

Greetings of Peace and Nonviolence! Friends of the Center might be interested to know that we just returned from a full day of Kingian Nonviolence training at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. Jonathan Lewis joined me for this introductory training workshop as part of their 8th Annual Peace and Justice Symposium, sponsored by the campus Gandhi-King Center for Diversity and Global Engagement. Center Director Jane Bello-Brunson and her staff do a fantastic job at operating the center and keeping the dream of nonviolence alive and thriving at Valpo! Their Symposium is first-class program. "Globe" and I received lots of positive feedback and we hope to establish a continuing relationship with their Center for future followup trainings. A nice addition to the day was the participation of local high school students who attended with their principal and school district superintendent. We were able to share a short video highlighting the URI Summer Institute, and Jonathan spoke passionately about his work with the Gathering for Justice combined with a video on the organizations background and purpose. If I had more time I could share a funny story about our "stretch limo" ride from Midway to their campus, but I'll save that for another day. Peace On, Paul BdeM

Free film screening

The STUDENT ALLIANCE FOR THE WELFARE OF AFRICA presents a free screening of PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL. A Film By Academy Award Nominated, Abigail Disney and Gini Reticker which chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country. Thousands of women ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim â€“ came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed with only their white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they took on the warlords and nonviolently forced a resolution during the stalled peace talks. A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, the film honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia.

Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.

The Screening will be followed by a discussion with survivors of Liberia's bloody civil war of fifteen years.

New graduate nonviolence course

New graduate nonviolence course, Theory and Research in Nonviolence and Peace Studies, will be offered in Spring 2010 as PSY 690(04). (The course will eventually be designated PSY/NVP 500, but the curriculum committee is not finished with its work yet, and so for this semester we will use the open-ended 690 topics course number.)

PSY 690 (NVP/PSY 500) is designed as an introductory graduate level seminar bringing together academic psychology (especially social and cognitive psychology) and ideas derived from traditions of nonviolent problem solving from several cultures. We will focus on understanding predictors and proposed mechanisms of violence and peace, as well as factors that may prevent or inhibit ready access to this understanding.

This course will be the “foundations” course for the coming Graduate Certificate Program in Nonviolence and Peace Studies. Students should consult with their major professors about other program requirements that may be met or strengthened by the course.

The course will meet on Wednesday afternoons, 2 to 4.50pm, location TBA.

The Center has a great training opportunity for any of our certified trainers!

The Traveling Theatre and The Providence After School Alliance is requesting a full-day training (9am-3pm) on Friday, June 26, 2009 at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston Campus.

The 21 students,16-19 years old, will be taking on leadership roles within their organization. They hope to strengthen creativity, literacy, problem solving, cooperative learning, self confidence and life skills necessary to face everyday challenges.

We need at least 2 trainers all day or any combination of trainers to cover the full day.

We all need some enrichment in our pursuit towards achieving a more peaceful world. Some do this through meditation, others through meeting and talking with other trainers.

The Center is pleased to offer yet another way to develop yourself as either a nonviolent practitioner, trainer, or both.

On the Center website www.uri.edu/nonviolence we have links to several of Dr. King's papers, including the “Pilgrimage to Nonviolence” and “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”

Dr. King's paper “Letter from Birmingham Jail” both outlines the steps of nonviolence as well as shows his strength in the face of imprisonment and direct confrontation.

Nonviolence Conference

The Building Life Foundations and the Global Nonviolence Conference Series will be hosting the Midwest Regional Kingian Nonviolence Conference on October 7-9, 2009 in St, Louis, MO.

The Center's former director, Dr. Bernard LaFayette will be presenting.

2009 Nonviolence Summer Institute

Ok, brace yourself, it is a long post! But the most important event of the year for the Center for Nonviolence, deserves a long post!

The URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies will offer its 8th annual Summer Institute from July 6-17.

The Institute certifies participants as trainers in the principles and practices of nonviolence conflict reconciliation.

According to Paul Bueno de Mesquita, Interim-Director of the Nonviolence Summer Institute, more than 30 people from around the world participated in the Level I or Level II Nonviolence trainings and received their certifications last year.

“This year we have already received inquiries and registrations from countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Somalia, Nepal, and Columbia.” Mesquita said.

The Center's former Director, Bernard LaFayette, Jr. Ed.D., Distinguished Visiting Scholar at URI’s nonviolence center, will facilitate the Institute.

There are two levels of certification offered through the Institute. Level I costs $750 and runs from July 6 through July 17. Level II is offered from July 13 through July 17 and costs $400. Deadline for registration is May 22.

Center Director Takes Stand On Arming Campus Police

As some of you may know there is a renewed effort to arm the URI Campus Police.

URI is one of only a few universities nation-wide whose campus police are unarmed. A Campus Security Commission has been formed to review the current practices and make recommendations regarding whether or not campus police should be armed.

The Interim-Director of the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies has weighed in with a letter to the commission. You are welcome to read it at our homepage.

Connecticut Training for High School and College Students

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's methods and strategies are being taught in cities across the country and around the world. What would he do? What can YOU do? Learn how to become a leader for change."

The Connecticut Center for Nonviolence is offering an introduction to the methods of nonviolence as taught by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is for College and High School Students on February 28, 2009 at the University of Hartford from 10am-3pm. It will be facilitated by the Director of the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence, Victoria Christgau and two associates of the Center Richard Tarlaian and Robert Jones.

Monthly Meeting

The Gathering for Justice Internships Available

Looking for an amazing internship that allows you to intertwine your interests in nonviolence, community organizing, and academics? Are you energetic, dedicated, and have 15-20 hours a week this summer or in a future semester? Look no further then these great internships being offered by The Gathering for Justice and their National Training Director Jonathan Lewis (a URI alum and Center for Nonviolence Certified Nonviolence Trainer).

Two internships are available-

Communications Intern

Assisting to research and post global, national and local trends of youth activism.
Posting a bi weekly blog informing the Gathering National web based network with events and legislation.
Conduct monthly interview with Gathering Local leadership.
Create and maintain an online registration process for all Gathering events/trainings.
Developing volunteer informational brochure and volunteer training manual

Intern to Assist the National Training Director

Assist in the research for Chicago and program evacuation of Kingian Nonviolence trainings.
Provide Nonviolence training & Gathering Circle meeting minutes summaries according to location.
Monitor Gathering trainers and there activity.
Gather data on the locations, participants, plans, next steps of each training.
Assist in managing trainer and participant data base.

Minor in Nonviolence at URI

Did you know that you can receive a minor in Nonviolence and Peace Studies at the URI??? In the word's of our new President...Yes You Can!

How do you start? Well first look over how to fulfill the minor's requirements by clicking here.

Highlights include-

The colloquium in Nonviolence and Peace Studies-a 1-credit Spring Semester course that gives an overview of the field.

Complete a nonviolence training experience such as one of the two-day workshops offered by URI's Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies. Then sign up for three credits of directed reading/independent study focused on the history, theory, and application of nonviolence.

A wide array of interdisciplinary courses to fulfill the remaining requirements.

You may want to talk to the minor's advisor Dr. Charles Collyer, an associate of the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies and a scholar in nonviolence. Contact him at collyer@uri.edu or 401.874.4227.

Then fill out the one-page Declaration of Minor form (this form is available from an Academic Dean's office or by clicking here!) and start studying Nonviolence!

Welcome to our blog!

Founded in 1999, the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies at the University of Rhode Island seeks to build a world of mutual understanding among people, in which nonviolent processes are used to reconcile conflicts and build community. We study and apply approaches which will foster more harmonious relationships at every level. The Center accomplishes this through educational and research opportunities, leadership development, collaboration with other organizations, and facilitating nonviolence trainings throughout the state, across the country, and around the globe.

Under the guidance of our former Director and current Distinguished Scholar and consultant, Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Jr. a close advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Director of the Poor People's Campaign, we have created similar institutions in Colombia, Palestine, Nigeria, South Africa, and England.
